Of the many classroom-sponsored service projects, the following
are representative:
Seventh and Eighth grade visit New Visions Shelter in Camden
to clean, sort donated goods, and bring homemade (schoolmade) baked
goods for the people who are served there.
Students have adopted a class at Bancroft School. We will write
to the children there as pen pals and we will visit together periodically.
Sixth grade organizes a UNICEF collection each fall. Sixth
grade students also act as kindergarten partners throughout the
year, visiting kindergarten classrooms weekly to read, help with
morning papers, etc.
Fifth graders collect and store used batteries which are
then disposed of without polluting the environment. Fifth graders
also collect and carry monthly Leavenhouse lunches.
Fourth grade sponsors a mitten and scarf tree in December
and collects canceled commemorative stamps which they forward to
a Quaker group that sells them to generate service dollars. They
also assist daily with the check-out of Reading Rainbow backpacks
to younger students.
Third grade takes responsibility for weekly collection of
the school's recyclable paper.
Second grade sponsors a Thanksgiving project available through
the A.I.D.S. Coalition. Second graders earn money with which they
purchase at a local supermarket the ingredients for two families'
Thanksgiving dinners.
First grade regularly visits a retirement home, using recess
time to walk the distance. They read with residents, sing, send cards,
and invite them to a performance of a first grade play.
Kindergarten classes work in the schools Butterfly/
Peace Garden and collect litter on their periodic nature walks to
Hopkins Pond.
Pre- Kindergarten classes collect supplies for a nearby animal
shelter.
