service/community > special projects

There are many school-wide service projects in which everyone --
staff, students, parents, and Meeting members -- can participate.
Some take place every year; others come and go as opportunity arises.
The Leavenhouse
Lunch Program is of long standing. Once a month children can
bring to school a second bag lunch, which, hopefully, they have
helped to assemble at home. These lunches are collected and delivered
to a nearby lunch program and distributed to those in need.
The school and Meeting together also sponsor a Leavenhouse
Neighbors program in which a family can sign up to visit on
a Saturday morning to help set up and/or serve a meal. This is an
on-going, year-round project.
An example of a periodic school-wide service opportunity is our
participation in Pedals for Progress. This non-profit agency collects,
ships, and refurbishes used bicycles to be used in third-world countries.
This is a project mainly for adults in our community, who not only
donate bicycles and help prepare them for shipment but also donate
money to cover shipping and restoration costs. Two years ago, the
school collected 120 bicycles one Saturday morning. In the spring
of 2002, the school participated in the project once again,
this time to collect bicycles as well as sewing machines, used computers,
soccer balls and cleats.
